Sun Care

Sun care is serious business, so you need to take proper measures if you want to keep your skin looking young and hydrated. There are good reasons for you to soak up some sunlight, provided that it’s in moderation, of course. Sunshine has been shown to improve our mood, regulate our body clock, and help the body generate the much-needed Vitamin D. Most people obtain adequate Vitamin D levels through regular incidental sun exposure. You can even maintain these sufficient levels by simply spending a few minutes outside when the UV Index is 3 or above, such as during summer.

As with anything in life, too much of a good thing is bad. Extended periods without skin protection (e.g., sunscreen and protective clothing) can lead to sunburn, premature signs of ageing, and an increased risk of skin cancer.

If you need sun care products, visit Ultraceuticals and choose from our comprehensive list of clinically tested UV sunscreen products and daily moisturisers with SPF 30 and SPF 50.

Ultraceuticals offer both homecare and in-clinic professional treatments designed to transform your skin within 90 days. Thus, we recommend that you start your skincare journey by booking your free online consultation with one of our qualified skin experts who can prescribe the best day- and night-time skincare routine for your skin type and concerns.

You can also visit our website and answer our skin quiz if you’re unsure of your skin type. With just a few clicks, you’ll know the answer, plus we will recommend the ideal skincare products for you.

How to protect your skin from the sun?

To help protect skin from sun, choose a UV sunscreen that says ‘broad spectrum’, which means that it can help shield your skin from UVA rays (which are responsible for the appearance of age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and other signs of photoageing) and UVB rays, which can cause sunburns and blisters.

Another thing to keep in mind is the Sun Protection Factor or SPF, which is the number that tells you how long it would take for the sun’s rays to redden your skin if you apply the sun care product as directed, as compared to the length of time without it.

Whether you need face sunscreen, UV lip balm, or sun care for your body, the general rule is to opt for a product that offers at least SPF 30.

As with any skincare product, sunscreens are only as good as how you apply them. The best practice is to apply it twenty minutes before going outside to give the active ingredients enough time to bind to your skin. If you’re planning to stay in the sun for a prolonged period, the most effective sunburn safety tip is to reapply the sunscreen every two hours of exposure, especially after swimming or excessive sweating.

Never skimp on sunscreen even on a cloudy day (or even in the middle of winter) because you still need sun exposure protection. Take note that even on a gloomy day, up to 80% of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays reach the earth.

Ideally, you should incorporate sun care products into your morning skincare routine. After putting on your hydrating serum and moisturiser, make sure that you follow it up with sunscreen. If you don’t do so, you won’t be giving your skin the protection it needs under sun exposure, which leads to premature ageing, uneven complexion, and dull appearance.

As a general rule, wait for your moisturiser to ‘settle into your skin’, which usually takes a minute or so, before applying your sun care product.
