Tiredness may exhibit in your skin as dark under-eye circles.

Targeting your tired under-eyes

The idea of eight hours uninterrupted sleep is a dream for many people – whether due to stress, young children or a night owl lifestyle, often people today find that they are not getting the rest they need. The resulting stress that is put on your body is reflected most visibly in the under-eye area.

What causes the dark circles under your eyes?

The skin underneath your eyes is thinner than the skin on the rest of your face, meaning that the colour of blood vessels underneath can show through as a dark blue tint. When you are tired, your body releases more of the hormone cortisol to help keep you awake. Cortisol increases the volume of the blood in your body, causing enlarged blood vessels which are then more obvious under your eyes

Many factors can contribute to making your dark circles worse – genetics, your face structure, allergies, stress, lifestyle habits (like smoking) and sleep deprivation.

How to help your tired eyes

As with many things with your health, prevention is better than cure! Although dark circles under the eye are partly hereditary, you can also take several steps to reduce them for a brighter, more awake complexion.

1. More ZZZ's

Aim for eight hours of sleep a night to ensure your body is rested. Also, try to avoid rubbing your eyes in the morning to prevent stretching the delicate skin, which can cause premature wrinkles.

2. Sun protection

No matter the weather is doing, it is important to wear daily SPF protection to prevent sun damage that leads to premature ageing. Because your under-eye area is so delicate, it's more at risk of hyperpigmentation as a result of the effects of the sun which can make the dark circles worse.

3. Target the area using potent active ingredients

Our Global Training Director, Tracey Beeby, says, "to treat dark circles under the eyes, try an energising mask or a Vitamin A (Retinol) eye cream that works to stimulate the blood supply to the area".

Take a look at our Ultra A Perfecting Eye Cream, which contains Ultraceuticals exclusive Ultra-Reti™ microparticles (advanced Vitamin A (Retinol) delivering technology) combined with a retexturising peptide to visibly diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as refine the delicate skin around the eyes.
