Coarse skin texture can be characterised by uneven tone, enlarged pores and lack of radiance. As we age, the natural renewal process of the skin slows down, making exfoliation even more important to keep skin looking its best. The cause
What causes coarse texture & enlarged pores?
Skin cells regenerate deep within the epidermis – as new cells are formed, old skin cells migrate to the surface. Unless they are sloughed away, these old skin cells will build up on the surface of the skin in uneven patches, causing the skin to look dry and dull. The build up of dead skin cells can also lead to blocked pores and excess oil, resulting in blemishes and acne.
Enlarged pores can be caused by several factors and occur when oil and dirt collect in your skin, causing it to swell, making pores to appear larger than normal. Pores can also look enlarged due to the loss of elasticity in the skin as we age. Sun damage can contribute to this as it causes the skin to thicken and skin cells to collect around the edges of the pores, and stretches them.
Genetics may also play a part in the size of your pores, which means you’re more likely to have larger pores if your parents do and in general, males tend to have larger pores than females.

How to soften coarse texture and enlarged pores
- Exfoliation (chemical or physical) helps to remove dead skin cells on the surface of your skin to reveal brighter and more refined skin underneath.

Manual Vs Chemical exfoliation
Physical exfoliates are products which contain ‘beads’ or particles that buff away dead skin cells as they move against the skin while applying to your face.
Chemical exfoliation uses enzymes or alpha and beta hydroxy acids such as lactic and salicylic acid to break down the bonds between the skin cells. The type of exfoliation that will work best for you depends on your skin type and your personal preference.
How does chemical exfoliation work?
- AHAs (Citric & Lactic Acid) exfoliate the skin by softening the skin's intercellular bonds that bind dead cells together within compact layer of the skin.
- BHA (Salicylic Acid) work to dissolve dead skin cells, clarify the complexion and decongest skin on the surface (desquamating layer).

Eight healthy panellists, between the ages of 30-50 years old with a mix of normal, combination of dry skin types were selected. They applied Even Skintone Serum once a day for three months to clean and dry skin.
All panellists used Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 30 during the day and didn’t apply any additional treatment products during the trial period. Amongst panellists who applied Ultra Evenskin Tone, more than 80% experienced visible improvements to their overall skin tone, refinement or the reduction of enlarged pores.
